Abdominoplasty / Tummy Tuck

We all wish we had a flat stomach, but few of us are lucky enough to have a naturally slim tummy without lots of exercise, a good diet and great genes! After countless crunches and too many diets to count, you’ve lost all the weight you can. And yet, that stubborn tummy won’t budge. What can you do when you’ve got an excess paunch from weight loss or pregnancy that can’t be removed through regular diet and exercise? To flatten that abdomen, ask your surgeon about tummy tuck

We can help you achieve a slimmer, more taut tummy with tummy tuck. Tummy Tuck, also known as Abdominoplasty or Panniculectomy is a surgical procedure used to flatten the abdominal wall or stomach area. Large amount of skin and fat are removed from the middle and lower part of the abdomen.

Abdominoplasty removes excessive hanging skin, and repairs loose or stretched muscle, thereby, improving abdominal wall tone and structure. Skin that contains stretch marks on the lower abdomen may be removed as well.

What to expect from Abdominoplasty or tummy tuck surgery?

  • Abdominoplasty removes the excess skin and fat deposits that appear as a consequence of pregnancies, old age and obesity, when the whole abdominal area is affected. When the affected area is smaller, located at the lower section of the abdomen below the navel, it is better to perform a mini-abdominoplasty.
  • Removal stretch marks or scars that may be in the area.
  • If necessary, the abdominal muscles may be tightened by means of a vertical fold in the middle, this will make your abdomen look firmer and your waist narrower.
  • It may also help to solve preexisting problems, such as hernias or eventrations.

What not to expect from Abdominoplasty or tummy tuck surgery?

Tummy tuck does not treat obesity. If you suffer from obesity, and have BMI > 34 or > 31 with any medical problems, please visit the section of our site devoted to bariatric surgery.

It is not used for removing fat deposits when they are small and the skin has a good elasticity. If this is your case, and diets and physical exercise do not produce the desired results, liposculpture is the right thing for you.

How is tummy tuck surgery performed?

In an effort to achieve the best tummy tuck result; several different surgical techniques are available. The most appropriate technique will be selected based on the condition of the patient, the extent of the procedure as well as the patient/surgeon preference.

The procedure is usually performed under general anesthesia; the surgery takes about 3 - 4 hours.

Abdominoplasty or tummy tuck requires a horizontal incision across lower abdomen (within or above the pubic area). The length of the incision varies depending on the amount of skin to be removed. In some cases an incision around the navel is made so that the excess skin above the navel is pulled downward and removed. The navel's position remains unchanged. The skin flap is then stretched down, extra skin is removed and the skin incision is stitched and bandaged to ensure proper healing with minimum scarring.

If large amounts of fat needs to be removed from the abdominal area, tummy tuck may be accompanied with Liposuction.

What is the post operative care and how long is the recovery period?

You might have a lot of pain and discomfort immediately following the operation. You may also experience numbness, bruising and overall tiredness for the next few days. For the first 2 days while resting and relaxing in bed, the surgeon may advise you to bend your legs at the hips to reduce strain on the abdominal wall muscles.

Within the first week the drainage tubes put in during surgery to prevent fluids from accumulating will be removed. A support garment will be worn for two weeks. You should be able to return to work or school within two weeks. Exercises that work the abdominal muscles should be avoided for three months. Low impact exercise can be resumed within 2-3 weeks. High impact exercise may be resumed within 6-8 weeks.

What is the outcome of the Abdominoplasty surgery?

The change in the body contour is remarkable, especially in those women who have a roll of fat and skin to hold below the navel.

Can I combine a tummy tuck with other treatments?

Many people choose to combine tummy tucks with other surgery. Some women feel that after childbirth, as well as losing firmness in their tummy, their breasts also lose firmness and opt for breast uplift or breast enlargement.

Your surgeon may suggest combining a tummy tuck with liposuction in the same area; you may like to explore having it in another area to give your body an overall slimmer effect.

If you would like to improve your skin’s texture and appearance then you may like to explore non-surgical anti-ageing procedures such as microdermabrasion and dermal fillers.

Of course you may feel that you would like to improve another part of your body, aside from the face. Explore our procedures and get in touch by filling our online form
