Scar and Birthmark removal treatment

Any type of scar or birthmark on the skin can be the cause of self-consciousness and embarrassment. We at Indicure understand your concern and need for a clean skin free of any marks or scars. Write to us explore the option best suited for your scar removal.

Whether your scars are from an operation, acne, or an accident, there is likely a scar treatment that can help diminish the signs and help you feel more confident in your skin. Most scar treatments are the same options available for acne treatment, wrinkles, birthmarks, skin rejuvenation and age spots.

There are different types of scars, which can influence the type of treatment you need. Our expert dermatologist would perform a close examination to determine whether the scar is a hypertrophic, keloid or atrophic scar.

A hypertrophic scar is characteristically raised, pink and limited to the trauma site, while a keloid scar, which is raised, tough, deep purple or red, is extended past the trauma area. An atrophic scar is saucer-like with indentations, and often the result of acne. After your scar has been classified, an appropriate course of action will be established between you and your doctor.

Scar treatment procedures

Laser Rejuvenation

Laser scar removal can be performed with local anesthesia depending on the size of the scar area. A high frequency pulsating laser penetrates the skin of the scar and focuses its heat on the cellular layer. This heat destroys the cell layer and stops blood supply to the scar tissues which leads to the eventual reduction of the scar.

Several treatments two to three months apart may be required to remove all or most of the scar. The standard laser skin rejuvenation recovery process is minimal, but will include some mild discomfort which can be managed with oral pain medication.

Dermabrasion

By scraping the surface of the scar tissue, the raised scarring can be reduced and new cell growth promoted through dermabrasion. When the dermabrasion treatment is finished, the area will scab over and begin to heal to form a better scar with new skin.

Difficult to treat keloid scars respond best to this treatment, and this procedure is not recommended for those with minor scarring, because essentially, it is trading one type of scar for another. Please go to our section on dermabrasion and microdermabrasion to know more.

Surgical Excision

In some cases, a scar may need to be completely removed by surgical excision. In this case the old scar is replaced by a new scar with more symmetrical or less noticeable. Under local anesthetic in an office or out-patient facility, a doctor will remove the scar, after which you will be instructed to keep it bandaged and dry for up to two days.

Collagen Injections

In the case of atrophic scars, which are sunken, collagen can be injected into the deeper layers of a scar tissue to help it become raised and lie flush with the rest of the skin’s surface. The minimal risk linked to collagen injections is the allergic reaction to collagen, however, prior to your injection you will be tested for the allergy. There is no down time or risk involved in these treatments, however you may need several treatments to raise a very deep scar, and the results may not be permanent, due to the absorption of collagen into the body.
