If
your skin's appearance is a stumbling block to your
feeling fabulous about your appearance, you may find
your solution to better skin is in chemical peels. For
people with blemishes, acne scars, uneven pigmentation,
excessive oil or age spots and wrinkles, chemical peeling
treatments can help restore the skin to a more youthful,
refined appearance.
Chemical
peels have been proven to be among the most popular
nonsurgical cosmetic procedures chosen by patients.
For instance, The American Academy of Facial Plastic
Surgery states that 1.1 patients underwent chemical
peels in 2006, making it the second most popular among
non-surgical cosmetic procedures.
This
non-invasive treatment is designed to promote new cell
growth by utilizing chemicals and skin peeling agents
to smooth and refine the skin by removing the less than
perfect outer layers on several parts of the body including
the face neck, chest arms, legs and back. Depending
on the level of peeling desired, different peeling solutions
can be used.
What can I expect
from the chemical peel?
- It rejuvenates
the skin by reducing signs of aging such as wrinkles
and actinic keratosis (marks and thick spots in
the skin associated with aging).
- It smoothens
the wrinkles that appear due to repeated muscle
contraction, such as the ones around the mouth and
eyes.
- It evens out
the skin's surface that is dry and cracked as a
result of too much exposure to the sun.
- It reduces
the difference in the distribution of pigmentation
- It reduces
acne scars.
- It reduces
stretch marks.
- It reduces
scars.

What should I not expect
from the chemical peel?
The procedure does
not correct sags, bulges and deep furrows. Those conditions
are often better treated by face, brow and eye lifts
or soft tissue fillers.

Am I a good candidate
for Chemical peel?
If you are fair skinned,
light haired, have much wrinkled face or have face dotted
with liver, age and sun spots, freckles or splotching
due to taking birth control pills – and want a looker,
fresher look , you are a good candidate for a chemical
peel.
If you have a face
that has a dull texture and color, it may also be improved
with chemical peeling. Precancerous keratoses or scaling
patches may also improve after chemical peeling.

How does Chemical peel
work?
If you've ever overdone
tanning on the beach and peeled afterward, you can easily
understand the principle used in chemical peeling. However,
it’s not rays of the sun, but an acid solution which
is painted on the skin of the face and, depending how
deep you want the peel to go, you can choose from a
30 percent or 70 percent strength chemical peel.
Chemical peels use
several types of acid solutions to improve and smooth
the texture of your facial skin. The acid works by removing
damaged outer layers and are sometimes also used on
the neck and hands.
As mentioned above,
there are three common types of chemical peels: For
light to medium uses, physicians use a solution known
as AHA (alpha hydroxyl acid,) which include glycolic,
lactic or fruit acid. AHA treatments may require a series
of multiple applications.
TCA (trichloroacetic
acid) is stronger and flays the skin down to
a greater depth while Phenol, the strongest acid, is
used for the deepest peels and is most commonly used
to treat skin wrinkling around the lips and chin.
TCA
peels are more effective in treating patients with darker
skin and offer a shorter recovery time than with solutions
used for lighter peels. A TCA peel may also require
pretreatment with AHA or a Retin-A cream.
Deep peels are usually
done once and provide longer-lasting results. The deep
peel is usually used on patients who have the deepest
wrinkling.
It triggers the coagulation
of cutaneous proteins and the consequent destruction
of the epidermic and/or dermic layer, which will be
replaced by new epidermis and connective tissue.
After the top layer
of skin is peeled away, new, fresh skin regenerates
without imperfections, lines and wrinkles. Deeper chemical
peels are an effective treatment for the extreme wrinkling
caused by spending too much time in the sun.

What types of facial
peels are available with Indicure?
We currently offer
Easy Phytic, Glycolic, Easy TCA, Unideep, Obaji Blue
and Phenol facial peels.
Glycolic Peel
- Derived from fruit acids, glycolic peels
are the mildest of the peel formulas and produce light
peels. These types of peels can provide smoother, brighter-looking
skin for people who can't spare the time to recover
from a phenol or TCA peel.
Easy Phytic
peel - This pampering treatment gives an effective
exfoliation, stimulating healthy skin from the dermal
layers, without the obvious signs of exfoliation. This
may be more suited to those who do not wish to have
visible peeling. It is an excellent maintenance therapy
for those who may have had other treatments.
Easy TCA Peel
- Trichloroaetic acid 15%, a medium depth peel,
targeting surface wrinkles and blemishes.
Unideep Peel
- Unideep is a chemical skin peel using 23%
Trichloroacetic acid (TCA). A deep skin regeneration
for photo ageing, acne, smoothing of acne scars, melasma,
chloasma, keratosis and fine lines. It has the same
benefits as a course of easy peel but using a stronger
solution so that one treatment is sufficient.
Obaji Blue
Peel - The Blue Peel is designed to improve
the appearance and health of your skin. Using a specific
concentration of the chemical trichloroacetic acid usually
30%(TCA) mixed with a special blue base to slow penetration,
the Blue Peel allows your doctor to monitor the appropriate
depth to effectively remove the thin surface layers
of aged and damaged skin from the face or other parts
of the body. These dead skin cells are replaced by healthier
ones, allowing the skin’s own clarity and tightness
to resurface.
Phenol Peel
- The strongest of the peeling agents. It is
used mainly to treat patients with coarse facial wrinkles,
areas of blotchy or damaged skin caused by sun exposure.
A popular area for using the phenol peel is around the
mouth to help eradicate deeper wrinkles and around the
eye area.

How is the chemical
peel procedure performed?
A full face chemical
peel usually takes one to two hours to perform and is
safely done in the physician’s office. Whereas light
peels are done without any anesthesia, deep peels may
require sedation or local anesthesia. Light peels take
only about 15 minutes to perform, while deeper peels
can take up to two hours to complete.
The first step will
be to clean your face in order to eliminate surface
oil. Your surgeon decides which solution is right for
your case and applies it to the treatment area, avoiding
eyes, brows and lips.
After the peel solution
has worked on the skin, it is neutralized with water.
About an hour later, a thick coating of petroleum jelly
is layered over the face and covers the protective crust
left by the acid solutions. That crusty layer stays
in place for one to two days. Some physicians use another
technique for cases of severe wrinkling, whereby a mask
made of adhesive tape, covers the patient’s face during
the early stages of the healing process.

How is chemical peel
different from microdermabrasion?
While microdermabrasion
works well on superficial skin imperfections (some acne
scars, fine lines, wrinkles, enlarged pores and sun
spots), a chemical peel is more effective on serious
skin problems like deeper scars and wrinkles. But the
after care and downtime are also longer.
For microdermabrasion
to be effective, you need 6 to 12 sessions (scheduled
2 weeks apart). Deep phenol chemical peeling is performed
only once in a person's lifetime, while a mild chemical
peel needs a session every 6 weeks, over the course
of a few months. A medium chemical peel should be performed
once every 2-3 months for at least a year.

How long is the recovery
time after the peel?
The recovery period
for chemical peels is different according to the type
of peel used. In general, the stronger the chemical,
the deeper the peel, which often reveals the most dramatic
results- but comes with the drawback of longer recovery
time.
Light peels often require
no down time, but you can expect some redness and flaking
dry skin for a few days afterward.
Medium facial peels
may have side effects like minor swelling and discomfort,
which can be treated with pain medication and after-care
items, like ice packs. Medium treatments may need up
to one week to heal sufficiently to allow you to return
to normal activity.
Deep chemical peels
do offer dramatic results and improvement to the skin,
but they remove multiple layers of the skin and you
will have some discomfort, and require longer healing
time. Post-peel, your skin will be very red and swollen.
You will be sore, and as the skin heals, itchy. You
won’t be able to wear make up for approximately two
weeks as your new skin cells develop, however, you will
be able to return to work.
After about one month,
your skin will remain pink, but you will be able to
wear make-up and return to normal activity. As with
any skin treatment, it is recommended that you avoid
all exposure to the sun or cover up carefully using
sunscreen.

What are The Long-Term
Effects of Chemical Peels?
The effects of a deep
chemical peel sometimes last as long as twenty years
and have quite dramatic results, according to the American
Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery.

Can I combine other
treatments with a facial peel?
As with many facial
rejuvenation treatments, a facial peel will work very
well alongside other treatments such as IPL, light therapy
and microdermabrasion. If you are looking for a more
dramatic anti-ageing effect, then you may like to explore
a mini-facelift or a full facelift.
