Microdermabrasion
is a lighter form of dermabrasion known as the "lunchtime
facial", and removes only the topmost layer of
skin to reveal fresh skin underneath. While microdermabrasion
may not produce the dramatic results of laser resurfacing,
there is no recovery time after the microdermabrasion
procedure. Microdermabrasion is an effective and modern
type of medium depth mechanical peel that restores the
lost freshness and elasticity of the skin due to factors
such as age, excessive exposure to sun or acne.
It
is a non-invasive and painless technique. You will feel
a pleasant tickling during the treatment. It does not
irritate the skin. By the end of each session you will
see a considerable improvement in your skin's condition.
A modern technique this technique consists in treating
the skin with a device that has rotating tips embedded
with small diamonds. The tip is connected to a noiseless
electric engine that generates suction for removing
the dead skin cells through a flexible tube. The tips
are interchangeable, with diamonds of different sizes,
so
the dermatologist may choose the adequate roughness
grade for each case. Microdermabrasion has been proven
to be among the most popular non surgical cosmetic procedures
chosen by patients. The American Academy of
Facial Plastic Surgery states that 817,000 patients
underwent microdermabrasion in 2006, making it the fourth
most popular among non-surgical cosmetic procedures.
What to expect from Microdermabrasion
surgery?
-
It evens out the skin's surface
that has become dry and cracked as a result of too
much exposure to the sun or due to aging factors
by stimulating the connective tissues.
-
It eliminates the dull and faded
appearance of the skin and boosts cell regeneration
by increasing blood flow and oxygenation.
-
It removes the wrinkles that
appear due to repeated muscle contraction, such
as the ones around the mouth and eyes.
-
It opens blocked pores.
-
It reduces the difference in
the distribution of pigmentation.

How is microdermabrasion done?
Instead of a small grinding
tool, the surgeon uses an instrument that uses a blast
of sterile grit and a vacuum in a closed loop system
to remove the first layer of skin. Sometimes known as
the “lunchtime” peel because a treatment can be completed
in half an hour, microdermabrasion is done more quickly
but does not produce effects that last as long as other
dermabrasion. The patient can usually return to her
regular activities more quickly. Microdermabrasion does
not require either a local or general anesthesia. Most
patients say microdermabrasion feels like an emery board
or sandpaper rubbing on their skin.
Microdermabrasion is
usually used for hyperpigmentation, some stretch marks,
uneven skin tone, reducing the dullness of aging skin
and smoothing out fine wrinkle lines. It is not used
for keloidal scaring, jagged ice-pick scars, skin cancers
or skin growths.

Can I combine microdermabrasion with
other treatments?
The beauty about Microdermabrasion
is that is actually enhances the results of other skin

with IPL and laser skin rejuvenation, as well as facial
peels.
