No
matter what we do, there are those problem spots on
our bodies that no amount of dedicated dieting, no number
of crunches, creams or cursing will help. In the battle
against bulge, sag and cellulite, one procedure has
emerged as the favored way to fix that stubborn fat.
Liposuction, also known as lipoplasty, suction lipectomy,
and liposculpture is the popular cosmetic surgery procedure
that can sculpt and shape the body by removing unwanted
deposits of fat from areas of the body a patient wishes
to improve.
Common
areas for liposuction include the buttocks, thighs,
abdomen, hips, upper arms, knees, neck, chin, and cheeks.
For
example, abdominal liposuction is a technique
used to recontour the body by permanently removing fat
deposits from the abdominal region. For some, the tendency
to accumulate fat deposits within the abdomen may be
genetically related. Furthermore, this fat is frequently
resistant to diet and exercise. Abdominal liposuction
provides a surgical remedy for treating this "problem
area" especially for those individuals who may
be somewhat discouraged after having lost unwanted pounds
without achieving a flatter abdomen.
According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons,
the number of abdominal liposuction procedures performed
in the United States has increased to 430,022 in the
year 2009.

What
can I expect from Liposuction?
-
It
removes the localized deposits of fat that are resistant
to diets and physical exercise. If you try to keep
fit and you eat healthy food and still you can't
get rid of the fat of certain areas of your body,
especially in the abdomen, hips, knees, ankles,
arms and face, then liposuction may be the answer
you are looking for.
- It
models your body.

What should I not expect from Liposuction?
It
does not lift hanging skin. If your problem is the excess
skin, we recommend that you visit the section of our
site devoted to dermolipectomy.
It
does not cure obesity. If you suffer severe eating disorders,
you may be interested in visiting the section of our
site devoted to bariatric surgery.
It
does not eliminate cellulite. Liposuction deals with
deep fat deposits, whereas cellulite is a superficial
problem.
Liposuction at a glance
-
Procedure :Improve body shape by removing exercise-resistant
fat deposits. Can be performed using the tumescent
technique, in which targeted fat cells are infused
with saline containing solution with a local anesthetic
before liposuction to reduce post-operative bruising
and swelling. Common locations for liposuction include
chin, cheeks, neck, upper arms, above breasts, abdomen,
buttocks, hips, thighs, knees, calves, ankles.
For
larger volumes of fat or for fibrous body areas,
ultrasound-assisted lipoplasty (UAL) may be used.
UAL is a new technique in which an ultrasound probe
is inserted beneath the skin to "liquefy"
the fat before it is suctioned.
- Length
:1 to 2 hours or more depending on the area.
- Anesthesia
:Local, epidural, or general.
-
In
/ Out Patient :Usually outpatient. Extensive procedures
may require inpatient stay.
-
Recovery
:Back to work: 1 week. More strenuous activity:
2 to 4 weeks. Full recovery from swelling and bruising:
1 to 3 months. Use of tumescent technique or UAL
may decrease post-operative bruising and swelling.

Am I a good candidate for the Liposuction?

you are concerned about the localized fat deposit in
some area like abdomen, thighs, buttocks, arms, cheeks,
chin, hips or neck, are above 18 years, are physically
and mentally fit, you are a good candidate for the surgery.

How
is Liposuction performed?
The
procedure can be performed under local or general anesthesia
depending upon the area where the procedure is being
performed, patient’s preference and surgeon’s comfort
level. The time required also varies with the area of
the surgery.
Small
incisions are made in an inconspicuous fold close to
the area of concern, e.g. for the hips a cut would be
made in the fold of the buttock. There are various techniques
that are followed determined by a combination of factors
including the area to be treated, the amount of fat
to be removed, the patient’s preference, as well as
the surgeon’s level of training and experience.
Super
wet technique: The surgeon injects a saline
solution containing a local anesthetic and adrenaline
into the desired region. This solution results in
fat deposits that are easier to break-up and remove.
Furthermore, the injection of extra fluid helps minimize
trauma to the surrounding tissue of the treatment
area helping to reduce swelling and post-operative
pain. Additionally, the adrenaline within the injected
solution helps decrease surgical bleeding thereby
further reducing the level of risk associated with
liposuction.
Tumescent
Liposuction: This liposuction technique is
similar to the "super-wet" method but uses
larger amounts of the injected liquid solution. The
benefits and risks of the "tumescent" technique
are also very similar to those associated with the
"super-wet" liposuction technique.
Ultrasound-Assisted
Liposuction (UAL): This particular liposuction
technique represents a more recently developed treatment
modality than "super-wet" and "tumescent"
liposuction. In its most simple form, UAL uses sound
waves to liquefy the fat deposits following the injection
of fluids. By using sound waves to break-up the fat
deposits UAL minimizes trauma resulting in less bruising
and blood loss. Furthermore, Ultrasound Assisted Liposuction
offers cosmetic surgeons an alternative technique
for treating areas that are typically difficult to
enhance with traditional techniques such as fibrous
areas of the body (i.e., male breasts), the upper
abdomen and the upper back.
Dry
Liposuction: This liposuction technique is
not frequently used today. This early method of liposuction
required general anesthesia and was absent of a liquefying
agent.

How
long is the recovery period and when can I resume my
activities?
Following
the procedure, the surgical area will be bruised and
sore for few weeks, and you will likely experience fluid
drainage from incisions. Due to infection fears, you
will be unable to have baths or swim, but showering
is not dangerous. The patient can shower from 48 hrs
after surgery, but must wear a compression garment from
the immediate post-op period for 3 to 6 months. Gentle
massage of the operated area, gradually increasing the
pressure applied, helps to reduce swelling and helps
to stimulate circulation in the skin Swelling can last
for month, and the area may appear larger before it
recovers to the smaller size you desire. Three to four
days of recovery will be required before you can return
to usual work and movement, and after approximately
a week, light physical exercise should be acceptable.
Be aware that you will be given strict instructions
for your recovery, and that recovery time will depend
on the surgery site and size.

What is the outcome of Liposuction procedure?
Liposuction
usually has very good results, both for men and for
women of any age, regardless of the weight of the patient.
After a typical liposuction performed in the abdomen
or waist, you may lose between 7 to 11 pounds (3.5 to
5 kg), according to the area treated.
Your
body will have more harmonious lines, which will probably
make you feel more satisfied when you look at yourself
and will make it easier to choose new clothes. The scars,
which are very small, will become unnoticeable in no
time.

What is The Long-Term Effect of Liposuction?
Following liposuction it is important that you maintain
your weight and body with exercise and proper diet.
Because fat cells are permanently removed by liposuction,
future weight gain will not occur in the treated areas.
However,
this does not guarantee that you won’t gain weight or
fat deposits in other areas of their body. Also, since
the aging process directly affects the firmness and
elasticity of the skin, older patients may not achieve
the same results as younger patients.
