Lips
are an important part of our lives. They frame your
smile, are used to kiss the ones you love, and are the
key to whistling happy tunes.
Some people are satisfied with the look of their lips
while others want to make their lips fuller. Due to
age and other factors, many people have lost volume
in their lips, leaving them aged and wrinkled. Lip augmentation
can enhance or restore a fuller shape to your lips and
help you get fuller, more luscious lips.

Am I a good candidate for the Lip enhancement
surgery?
If
you’ve got small, thin lips, asymmetry between the upper
and lower lip, too much lip fullness, reconstructive
needs, or wrinkling from smoking or aging, you may be
a good candidate for the surgery.

What
does Lip enhancement procedure involve?
There
are various methods used to augment the lips, including
the use of implants. The most common way to increase
lip size is with injectable fillers. The following are
just some of the more common fillers used, including
Restylane, a recent development in cosmetic surgery.
Each of these fillers has its own set of benefits and
risks.

Temporary and Permanent Fillers
Lip
augmentation through temporary injectable fillers like
collagen, restylane and Autologous fat are temporary
fillers. As these materials are absorbed by the body,
these temporary plumpers can yield only short-term results.
The effect may only last as long as three to six months
before another treatment is required. Many patients
interested in permanent lip augmentation choose to undergo
a trial with injectable material prior to having a permanent
lip implant inserted.
The
most common fillers are:
-
Collagen:
A protein found in our bodies, collagen provides
support to various areas of the body, including
the lips. For cosmetic surgery purposes, collagen
is produced from purified bovine tissue collagen.
This product can be produced in various thicknesses
to meet individual patient needs. However, a skin
test for allergic reactions is required before receiving
collagen.
-
Fat:
Fat from one’s own body is another form of filler
used to plump the lips. Because the fat comes from
the patient’s body, there is no risk of any allergic
reaction occurring.
-
Restylane:
This product is a non-animal, biodegradable
gel based on hyaluronic acid, another substance
found in our own bodies. Because collagen is non-animal
based, an allergic reaction occurring is highly
unlikely.
-
There
are several permanent injectable fillers as well,
which include Artecoll, Aquamid and Metacrill among
others. Inserted under the skin, lip implants come
in a variety of materials which each have varying
benefits. Synthetic implants include silicone soft
form, Gore-Tex and numerous other options, the benefit
of implants is the option to remove them should
there be a problem or a change of heart.
-
Artecoll
is a combination of synthetic beads, or
microspheres, suspended in a collagen solution.
Over the first 90 days after treatment, the injected
collagen dissolves and is replaced with new collagen
created by your body which binds the synthetic microspheres
in place. It takes Artecoll approximately three
months to yield full results, and a second treatment
may be required to achieve the look you want.
-
Autologen
is the natural collagen found in the patients own
skin. Harvested from other cosmetic surgery procedures,
the results of Autologen are long lasting and risk
free in terms of allergic reactions. When your own
collagen is harvested, it is sent to a lab and sterilized
for re-injection. You can store unused material
for repeat treatments as needed. Some doctors believe
that Autologen is permanent lip filler.
-
Gore-Tex
implants are made of soft, porous polyetrafluoroethylene
(ePTFE), a non-reactive and non-toxic synthetic
material. Gore-Tex lip implants come in different
shapes and sizes, and offer permanent lip enhancement
by allowing the tissue to incorporate the implant
into the lip. Chances for infection are greatly
reduced with Gore-Tex implants and there is no chance
of absorption into the body.
-
SoftForm
or UltraSoft implants are similar to Gore-Tex, and
make a softer, more natural form when inserted into
the lips. SoftForm does not shrink or absorb, but
can be removed if results are unsatisfactory.

How is the lip enhancement procedure done?
Temporary
lip enhancement is a simple procedure, considered to
be non- surgical and takes about 30 minutes. It is done
under local anesthesia and is relatively painless. The
procedure is done with small needles containing the
chosen lip filler and a small amount of anesthetic to
provide numbing to the area. Once the surgeon has identified
the best location for injection, typically the corners
of the mouth, a tiny needle is inserted and the liquid
is injected in to the area. Variations to the techniques
are used during lip augmentation, depending upon the
type of filler.
Lip
implant procedures are slightly more invasive than the
temporary lip augmentation. The area will be numbed
using a local anesthetic, and through small, almost
imperceptible incisions in the corners of the mouth,
the surgeon will thread the implant through the lips
using a small needle. Incisions will be closed using
tiny dissolvable sutures which should disappear in under
two days. Considered a surgical process, the permanent
enhancement implant procedure can take from one to two
hours to perform.

Can I combine Lip enhancement with any other
cosmetic procedure?
Many
of our regular clients combine non-surgical treatments
with semi permanent make-up. You can also combine lip
enhancement with Botox or if you are concerned with
the texture of your skin, check out dermabrasion or
chemical peel.
